| | I also had a problem with the map that installing the TOSC expansion fixed. Hitting escape from the global map (the one that showed all the areas) would crash the game. Since installing the expansion I've had no problems.

| | Craig - have you tried deleting the files in the sub folder called "Data" within the "Cache" folder in your BG directory?

| | Because in some computer installations, when the cache grows large, either the memory can't handle it, or a memory site that's already allocated is pulled for the task. End result: instant crash. Delete the cache, and you in effect start the process over. When I had a slow machine and was running BG1 a couple of years ago, I always emptied the cache before playing the game.

| | Each time you enter a new area, each AR file temporarily saves to this Cache/Data file. Occasionally there will be conflict or overload and your game will crash.
This is not just a BGI problem, I have found it also in BGII, IWD and HoW. They are temporary files - delete them!

| | It normally does - bear this in mind
In that case I would suggest you reinstall your game, doing a full install if you haven't already as some files may not have transferred properly in your first install.
If you get ANY error messages during installation this is where your problem is for definite. In this instance abort your install, then remove DMA from your CDRom drive (settings/control panel/systems/device manager) Right click on your CDRom drive and go into properties. Uncheck the box saying DMA, restart your computer, then reinstall the game. Some fast CDRoms do not transfer all data correctly (mine is 52x and only after replacing my old 32x with the 52x did I start getting problems with installations not happening properly and game crashes on entering areas).
You can recheck the DMA box after your game installs.
NB your reinstallation after taking of DMA will be really slow but worth it if this fixes your problem. Also when you uninstall (if this is what you decide! ) do not manually delete any BG folders that remain and your save game will be there when you are ready to reload. (Uninstall will not delete your saves but you may wish to back them up into my documents or something to be sure)
If this doesn't work I would suggest contacting Support@Interplay.com. I have always found them really helpfull! You will need to give them your exact error message though....
Good luck!

| | DMA - direct memory access I think it means. Anyhow, I was having problems with the installation when this was set as files being copied were then being checked against files on the CDRom and found to be different as they were not transferring properly. Unchecking this, effecting a slower install, allowed me to successfully install.
If this hasn't sorted your problem I suggest you drop them a note...sorry I can't help any further I hope you get it sorted !
Also check an old posting of mine on the BGII site called Technical Problems - Leeho recommended a site here that really helped with installation and running problems....maybe you can find your answer here

| | So you put in CD1 and the screen comes up giving you the choice to play/uninstall etc?
You click on uninstall, it starts to uninstall but then also starts to play the game? Sorry but I am a little confused as to what "restarted"!
Try going into Start/Programs/Black Isle/Baldurs Gate and down to uninstall and do it that way.
Remember to try my advice re unchecking DMA before reinstalling. Once installed you can re-check it.
Another thought, do you have a partitioned drive by any chance? or two separate hard drives? What exactly was your error message? I am a little confused that it refers to a DIR file
