The Tech Path

Are you essentially screwed if you create a character who focuses on firearms? My first game of Arcanum I played as a character like that and I got to a point where I could not hope to defeat the enemies I was facing. I wish I could specify that place where I was stuck but I don't remember now exactly, but it was not that far into the game. The stats that allow you more party members in my case were also low, so I could not get more powerful help either. Are firearms a lost cause in this game?

no, you're not. i have played my characters before as technologists, all wielding firearms and they are a powerful group, shooting at enemies from a distance killing them before they even reach the party. focus on increasing your skills on firearms itself (as much as possible, train to become a firearms master), and put modest ability scores at perception (because this will influence your accuracy in hitting your enemy) and strength (because some big guns have a minimum strength requirement), if i recall correctly. try to wear that googles that raise your perception by one point or the helmet of vision. if you could also invest on charisma (as high as 20 points), you can also train to be master of persuasion so you can recruit lots of tech members (irregardless of alignment) whom you can give firearm weapons as well. excellent recruitable NPCs are franklin payne (before going to thanatos) and sebastian (from the boil). recruit them as soon as allowed.

there are instances in the game that long-range combat is direly needed. Fighting golems in those mines are very hard to do if you engage in melee combat. so using firearms is the way to go.

my favorite firearm weapons were the hand cannon, bronwyck's gun (from a schematic you'll find in the isle of despair), elephant gun, long range pistol and the repeater rifle or mechanized gun. make lots of bullets because you'll need them. invest one point on explosives and purchase a schematic that can let you make bullets and gather the ingredients such as coal and saltpeter that you can find at trashbins anywhere.

i find playing as technologists to be more exciting than playing as magic users. though, i've not played arcanum for about 3 years now. but i really want to play it again if i have the time. arcanum is a cool game.

Firearms is actualy one of the easyest way to go.Grab a scoped sniper rifle from the Firearms master trained and no monster or person with stand over 3-4 shots.

It actualy was too easy for me,so i quit playing with him.
