Playing a Gnome

I just finished playing two games as a Gnome Technologist and here are my observations:

I chose gnome this time because they start with 2 points (1/2 CP) in haggle. This means that you can become a Haggle-Expert (and sell almost anything to anybody) with alot less character points. Normally, to become a Haggle Expert, you would have to add 3 CP in Haggle and around 4 CP in WP. With this Gnome character, with its starting Haggle bonus and 10 WP, it only requires 2 Haggle CP and no WP CP, saving 5 CP.

This lower haggle results in a little less cash. For instance, a kathorn crystal will only get you 87, rather than 93; Durin’s Truth will cost you 1750, rather than 1500; and you will have to pay full fair on ships. This is a small price to pay for the 5 CP though.

As a gnome, there are a few dialog changes. The dialog with Gilbert Bates about Stenner changes a little, but the end result is the same.

The biggest change I noticed was with Thorvald Two Stones. You no longer have the "Are you a dwarf or a gnome?" option, so you cannot get him to join your party. It is appropriate that it should no longer be an insult to compare him to a gnome. If you have high persuasion you can convince him to give you the glasses though. The walkthough says it is dependant on intelligence, but I was not given that option with my lower-persuasion game.

I think, that these Points are better invested in Dex and Pick Pocket. Dex is usefull for every character and with Pick Pocket you get more than enough money.

I have always played a good character... and Pickpocket can get you into trouble.

Not if you're master
I always play with max Dex and the few points in Pick Pocket to become a master are a good invested (in my opinion).

Talking

I love playing a gnome for pretty much the same reasons you do, Brf1; though I prefer fighting/magic over tech.

While I usually prefer to go solo, OTOH sometimes it's fun watching a little Napoleon leading around a ragtag bunch of humans, dwarves, and even a half-ogre or two!
