noob question about weapons

I made a pyrotechnic axe, and keep missing my opponents with it...
I am melee master and my strength is sufficient to wield an axe...

What other stats determine my successful usage of weapons ? I tried boosting strength, dexterity, dodge...but nothing seems to work...

Yeah, I get that sometimes. I think it's a bug, it happened to me a couple of times with weapons though the more annoying version of it would be lockpicking. Max skill, master, skeleton key and I (critically) fail practically every time.

So it's not a noob question.
