flow spectrometer?

Can anyone tell me how to use the flow spectrometer? It says it requires charges, I bought a battery, but still cannot figure out how to use it. I tried loading it on the hotbar, but then when I click it it just equps into my off hand, I still have no clue how to make it work. Anyone know?

Just slip it into your left hand slot (the one marked with the shield/torch symbol) and that's about it. It gives you a bonus in detecting traps, I never needed any charges for it

Oh...well I don't have detect traps skill, and with it in my off hand I still had traps exploding all over me :/ I thought that it would make detect traps skill unnecessary. I figured it just didn't work because it didn't have charges, lol.

I've always had trouble with the Flow Spectrometer. Firstly as mentioned it is equiped as a shield, secondly in my experience it will eat any batteries carried in inventory way fast and finally while it is eating batteries it should start revealing the locations of any traps in the area.

I don't like this piece of equipment though, the charge upkeep is much too high.
