Loading a third char

Hey, i gotta problem. And i hope somone out there can answer my question. Well my cousion and i have been playing CoN for about a week now on 2 player. But i was wanting to let my other cousin play too and help us out. But i couldnt get it to let me load a third char in. Is it possible to load in a third char withought having to start the game over.

okay to load a third char first you have to plug in the
three player adapter depending on what ps2 you have
then press start go to add/remove characters go
to the third spot or any spot unowned press the
triangle then go to the memory card with your cousins data on it
press X to load the character then back at the ADD/REMOVE
character screen prss X on your cousins character and then your
Done.

I already tried that but it showed the 3rd and 4th char slots with a gray tint and wouldnt let me select them.

But I guess tryin again couldnt hurt.
