Anybody Else?

Ok, maybe I'm alone here, but I found Freedom Force to be a very fun game. The comic book theme made it quite different from your typical fantasy or sci-fi RPG, but I still enjoyed adding more powerful superpowers and abilities like levitation and flying to my characters as they increased in level.

Has anyone else given this game a try? It's been out for a couple of years already, but it's still a fantastic game by today's standards.

I've had it ever since I first started playing earth and beyond which was about a year or two ago i think. i found it to be quite satisfying single-player wise. multiplayer was a different story, as most of the custom heros were way too powerful. it takes skill to use the default ones, anyways.

Freedom Force was a great game (in fact I'm replaying it right now), but didn't have a very long life-span due to short single-player and poor multiplayer, though it is fun playing co-op campaigns. I'm pretty sure your far from alone considering the number of custom meshes and skins on the net.

Freedom Force is just fantastic.
It's arguably the only game I ever heard of that literally allows you to create any kind of character you can think of!
No limits to imagination!
I love the way you can *create* abilities instead of selecting them from the list, when you make a custom character.
I love all that ... Freedom!

(he! he! I don't think the name was about this anyway... funny)

I too enjoyed this game, i remember reding a review of it in P.C gamer, thinking it looked rubbish, then saw it for a fiver, and picked it up, seeing as it had got a good review. i was then addicted and played for 18 hours straight i to love the character creation, especially the prestige system

Freedom Force is a good game.I played the main campaing until the mission where you have to beat giant robots.I never played with custom characters. My favorite character in the campaing was Liberty Lass because he was damn speedy.Maybe ill try to create custom chars.

I've got it, but I've never tried it. How does the enemy AI fare? Can you select among a group of missions, or is the game pretty linear? Other than skill/power boosts at the end of a battle, do your forces receive anything else?

The AI's pretty average. The game is VERY linear. Your forces also receive 'prestige' which can be used to purchase characters (incl. custom-made).

It's the linearity that's a killer, for me. Admittedly, all RPGs are truly linear, when you get right down to it: the hero is meant to achieve a specific objective, and usually has a few others bridges to cross along the way. So what I mean by non-linear, is plenty of programmed landscape--dozens of hours--between those goals/bridges, that let you approach the final confrontation in your own fashion. Morrowind is a good example as a non-linear RPG. It has some serious limitations, but you can easily get lost in a range of subisidiary activities for 100 hours and not bother about the the plot. Add on mods, and that can literally rise to 300 hours.

So I'll give Freedom Force the go-by for the time being, though I imagine I'll try it at some pont. It seems rather more like a strategy title--and there's nothing wrong with that; but I prefer a different breed of strategy, too.

Freedom Force is a good game, but waaaaaaay too short. I finished it in under 30 hours on the first play through. I'm hoping Number 2 is much longer. And a bit less linear.

Cheers,

The game is linear, but you can get lost for hours creating chracters, and making skins

Lots of great games are linear, in fact games that many people regard as the greatest ever are quite linear. Half-life, Call of Duty, Diablo, and Megaman Battle Network just to name a few. Linear games because theu are professionally guided (I don't like the word 'restricted') can provide far more cinematic experiences whilst still preserving atmosphere (take HL2 for example). I really don't understand the fuss about non-linearity.

Anyway the strengths of Freedom Force are it's custom character, the unique character, amazing sound and (IMHO) the great graphics (this from somebody who finally just finished Farcry). The different characters also allow different ways to approach the same situation (e.g. mind control vs. flying in then hitting people with traffic lights), just like in Deus Ex.

I have not played the original (I tried the demo but it did not apear to work on XP) but I have tried the demo of V3R (if that is the abreviation it is going by) and I like it. As a few people have said, the character customazation is great. You can;t save or play with a custom hero in the demo though...
I like being able to create my own powers and stuff. I dislike the veiw though. I now it is kinda what the game is about; an over simplified comic book good vs. evil scenario, but it still bugs me. It is to black and white. I mean, come on, the Nazis as bad guys. They are like "the forces of ultimate evil"...It is just to black and white. However, when looked at as a comic book, all that becomes irelevent. I actually like it. It is cool that there is a game that is so much like a comic book. Very original. So, ya, I like the game.

I wouldn't really call Freadom Force an RPG in the same sense you would call BG or Morrowind an RPG. In fact I would probably compare it more with Commandos or it's kind, it's more of a squad based game, where you have your choice of heroes to take with you each mission, you are given objectives that you have to accomplish, you have to choose your team carefully by knowing the type of enemies you will be facing their weakness and so on.

There are no dialogues in which you can choose what to say and there really is no choice for you to make besides which heroes to choose and which powers to use. I would call Freedom Force more of a strategy game then an RPG.
