If you use the thief scout or thief adventurer script your character, thief or not, can hide in shadows or detect traps (which works to find secret doors). Even though your skill is 0 you can still pass the check depending on other conditions (like being in a shadowy spot). Ive used this to hide in shadows with my sorceror.
Edit: I meant to post this in BGII forum. Is there anyway to move it?
