| AFAIK that was a bug that occured on some machines with v1.0. If you haven't patched your game yet, do so: The official 1.2 patch is basically mandatory; I can also recommend Wesp5's excellent unofficial patches, although you should go through the readme prior to installation to determine whether you want the Basic patch (bugfixes only) or the Full patch (lots of gameplay changes and restored content). There's also the "True" patch, although I've never tried it.
That all said: If your game already is patched, well... then I for my part am out of ideas. ;-)
