There is a part in the article where it is stated that the knife had not damaged any of his vital organs. So I suppose if that really did happen, he was left only with a huge back pain.
Though it does sound suspicious-not noticing it while being dead drunk, I can stomach that, but still not feeling a thing as you stroll around the house? Nah.
