Don't worry about the max, is far over to one million (about 100.000.000, don't remember exactly).
The highest character level is 65 (TQ) and 75 (TQ: IT).

Are you sure? I can't check right now as i don't have the game installed at the moment, but iirc killing Nessus with my lvl 42 Harbinger (normal) yield me no exp at all.
I can't check or confirm that though =/
