| You've run into that fighter/thief problem, haven't you? I don't want to wreck it for anybody else, but yes: if you do the Fighters Guild first, then you will encounter a problem when you need to do the Thieves Guild quests. However, I don't know why you can't actually join the Thieves Guild. What did you do to piss them off?
You could try to solve matters by using the console. Hit the ~ key, then type:
pcjoinfaction thievesguild
Hit return. That should work: let me know if it doesn't. If it doesn't, try quotes around thievesguild, or even separating it into two words.
Myself, I always did the quests with mage and thieves guild first, then about halfway through, join the fighters.
