That's fine if you have the co-ordinates to the pass (or know roughly where it is and are prepared to spend hours searching for it). Be careful doing that though, it is possible to screw up the game visiting areas to early, I know, I've found out the hard way.
As to the Medical Arachnoid schematic being broken, It simply doesn't work, you get the ingredients together, make the thing, but it isn't deployable. It can be fixed, and I actually did fix it, but unfortunately the fix is on the hard drive on my dead PC, or I'd post it here. To fix it you need to be able to extract the game files and edit them.
