Once I did steal the safe combination and hit road. Then I returned and everything was still well. On the third time though, when I tried to enter the town Doc Roberts and two town guards had killed the bridge thieves (I still go the fate point when I walked up to them though) and were hostile towards me. When I checked the journal it said the town hated me for robbing their bank. xD
Best way to loot the thing imo is to rat out Bens and everyone is happy.
