Well, well ... Then it seems there's a bug. Plate mail has zero alignment shift, you know. However, my Hero wore it while committing evil deeds in the Chapel (the Bow is sooooo tempting, you know), and after in it game showed the Hero evil (even third-grown horns), altogether naked he was about zero, nearly good ... wearing Fire Monkey and Griphon tattoos (first with most powerful positive alignment boost).
