| Resting in an inn increases your healing rate and you cannot be disturbed by monsters.
It's difficult to finish the game quickly (in game time) without a healer. You'd have to pound back the potions and make heavy use of NPC healers.
I think druids and clerics automatically cast healing spells on the party in one rest period (8 hours) and then rememorize the spells you've selected in the next rest period. That's why if your party is hurt badly (and has a cleric or druid), you'll always rest for at least 16 hours.
The manual is one of the worst game manuals I've ever seen.
Why don't you like clerics? A melee-oriented cleric or druid (high Str, Con, Wis) is one of the best characters available.
