I felt pretty much the same way after awhile of playing the game. Then I started getting into the mod thing, and it really made the game better by leaps and bounds. There are mods out there that address this issue by trying to put more dpeth and realism in the dialogue options. There are also tons of mods that provide companions for your character, some of them very well written. Try looking through the sticky threads or seaching around some of the mod community sites maybe.
It never made the game come up to the Baldur's Gate Series or Planescape: Torments standards IMO, but it helped immensely.
