| Balduran looted an exotic land and upset the locals, who placed a curse on his crew. This is what turned them into the monsters they became. As for the two groups, they are the same except one group chose to accept their "human" side and the other their "animal" side. The ones on the ship chose to allow their beast-like cravings to take over and thus stay in wolf form - therefore not belonging with those who chose to try and subdue the animalistic cravings and stay in human form.
