Once again, it depends on how far you're willing to go with the play. Just like in majority of RPGs fighters tend to be the newbie-friendly character at the beginning allowing to do some serious buttkicking, but down the line mages takes the lead (except DS I, where rangers simply pwnd :PP). I mean, if you just tend to play the game through once and quit after killing Valdis (or the mage, if BW) then fighter, if you continue... (read following )
I'd personally like to know, what class is the best for the hardest difficulty level. Fighter (and ranger?) seems to own the mercenary level, but what about the other two (elite and...)? All in the context of a solo play, of course.

I guess, there is a side issue with the game type as well (original or BW) I still didn't get my BW (which makes me sad... ), so can't tell. But there are two mix classes, which weren't discussed here, alas would be nice to hear the ideas about these two as well.

Btw, I like the 4-suit-idea, but not for my brains. =)
