| I would ask if you have the official patch downloaded and installed, but the Original Saga 3-disc version already comes fully patched.
Can you load a previous save, and continue onward by skipping that area, or by skipping that wand?

You don't need to worry about a patch, because as I mentioned, the 3-disc version you got comes fully patched.
If a file that gets installed becomes corrupt (such as the one that, say, a certain item like that wand uses), or you think your .ini file is now fubar, then re-installing will definitely help. And I think that un- and re-installing doesn't erase any existing savegames.
