Its true - that class progression I mentioned is weak at the beginning.. but its that way for all characters (though more so for that character), and it doesn't stay that way for long provided you obtain several spells and crank-up your skills to increase their damage. In fact virtually all of my class progressions obtain their first 2nd tier class primarily (if not totally) with the use of spells (..principally because those 2nd tier opponents have huge hit point reserves - especially on the "hard" setting).

Still, as far as game progression is concerned - the real problem is the sewers and the poor experience point gathering there. In a "fashion" the sewers is almost like a totally different game (and one I purposely avoid).
