RAM can be paired across speed without problem, but you'll not utilize the higher speed.
The question you need to answer yourself is what matters to you.

If you use application which takes up a lot of RAM and requires a number of shifting around (alt-tab and so on), I'd go for the higher volume over the speed, as the speed in itself is rather negligible.
If you go 100% for performance for some reason, and need the extra speed, then of course the 2gb is preferable.

If you simply are going to play games, and use it for everyday usage, I'd go for 3GB over 2.
Then if you find something doesn't work right, then yank the 1 module out of the machine.

The benefit is nothing next to a better graphic card for instance. So if worried about performance, I'd suggest finding more suitable and more beneficial places to focus on then a few percent from RAM.
