DaveO is quite correct about that
really cool bed just north of the church in a small house/cabin. You drag it into your inventory and can carry it anywhere. When you are out in the middle of nowhere and it is dark and you don't feel like stumbling around you drag it out, click on it to sleep, wake up and then drag it back into your inventory until next time. It is a phenomenal time saver and if I am correct it doesn't weigh anything!
As for stashing your items, I really utilized the town of Riverdale (can't remember if this name is correct). Just northwest of the blacksmith I decided I needed to throw some things on the ground and see what would happen if I slept: Would they be there or disappear? Guess what? No one touches your items. I had charms, armor, weapons, boots, etc., thrown about and they remained there as long as I needed.
