| We wear kevlar vests, which protect against some bullets some of the time. We stopped wearing armor when guns were created, because bullets pierce armor. That is the reason you don't see soldiers now days with armor covering their entire body or shields to block bullets, it is because anything durable enough to block bullets would turn the soldier into a paper weight. That and we can always create stronger guns or use bigger/more-dense bullets if armor were suddenly strong enough to block the bullets.
Edit: Good examples:
If you're american, you should have no trouble picturing soldiers from the civil war. They were wearing no armor, whatsoever. Kevlar vests hadn't been invented then and any armor they could've worn would've been pierced by bullets.
If you're european, perhaps you can picture a 16th century fencer who focused on speed and light weight swords instead of wearing heavy armor and powerful swords that can cut through it. This is because armor became in disfavor by this time. Guns had something to do with it. At least, that is my understanding of it.
