In my opinion most of Joyce really
is "impenetrable".
I would recommend reading his short story collection
The Dubliners from which the short story "The Dead" is taken. It is fairly straight forward prose, while
Ulysses is stream of consciousness. I hate stream of consciousness.
While some of the passages from
Ulysses are very beautiful, the book as a whole is mainly good for treating insomnia.
