You're experiencing the looting bug. This is solved either by atari patch 3 (not recommended because the next option is better) or temple.zip applied on top of atari's patch 2. There's a sticky thread about patches that tells you everything you need to know.
If you've tried to patch it and you're still having this problem, odds are you didn't succeed in patching it correctly. We'll need further details on what you did. The guys at co8.org might be able to help even more.
