That may have been because Bioware was two successive companies. The first was owned by four young physicians up in Canada who loved getting together for roleplaying PnP sessions, and wanted to make the best computer version of it they could--which became the BG series.
After that, two of the physicians didn't like the way the company was moving towards becoming a slick corporation, and bailed. The other two took on partners, and faded into the background. The new Bioware makes kiddie RPGs, hits its deadlines on time--unlike its predecessor by the same name--and hasn't got an original or interesting idea to offer, IMO.
