The only time where I use other such "small guns" towards Mutants is when I can "abuse" the obstacles and shoot - duck for cover and repeat. Standing in the way otherwise is deadly.

This is where grendaes come handy, actually, since you can throw those over the obstacle, even though you don't see the enemy, and still hurting it quite badly
