Back in gEnie days, $50/month was nothing for some Gemstoners. I remember knowing a few folks who would show up for a month, play out their credit cards to the max, pay it off the next month (when they were out of the game), then repeat.
Some had bills exceeding $500/month, and I'm not joking. Then AOL came along and all that changed, of course. I can't help thinking it wasn't all to the good when the game suddenly jumped form 100+ people online at a time to 1000-1500 people. The revenues greatly increased, but the roleplaying and interactions simply went through the ground.
