| Multi-classing can be very powerfull. But you will level slower then singleclass characters and you will be 1-2 levels behind them (your experience is devided by 2 and distributed among your classes).
The true power of multi-classing comes into play when you don't pick the maximum numnber of teammembers (so you will gain more experience).
A fighter/cleric can be a powerfull combination, just like the ranger/cleric (also acces to druidspells).
I always prefere to keep my mages single-classed, but that is just personal.
[edit] As for the strongholds in BG2, you get the stronghold of the quest you do first.
