Remember, that most of the enemies will attack you when they see you. Using this approach you can try to lure them one-by-one away from the pack. Otherwise you will have - particularly in the beginning - a lot of problems even with lesser creatures, such as bloodflies. I am not completely sure whether in G1 exist Small Bloodflies, but that doesn't change the fact.
Know also that hitting one of them with arrow may cause that the whole pack runs after you. But such behaviour is best to discover by learning, since not all monsters act the same.
Using the melee weapon, I prefer the swing method: that is, stand in battle, than press Q and E (turn left/right, respectively - not walk left/right). On the other hand, my brother uses forward/right approach, and it works also. Guess you can develop your own fighting technique.
