What do you recommend as a difficult, but doable solo?

Is a Gnome Illusionist/Thief too easy or too hard?

I know Mages make the game easy, but the Illusionist part means no Necro spells (Horrid Wilting).

Is a 1/2 Elf M/T easier or harder?

I know a F/M/T is pretty easy, but it's also so common.

I've gotten pretty far with an archer before, that was interesting.
