To be honest, it has been a while since I bought them, I know the packaging said they were for XP, but for some reason they did not load.
Actually thinking about it, I don't think the problem is with the programmes, but rather with the version of XP I was running at the time.
Ever since I got XP, I have been having problems with the Compatibility Wizard - it doesn't work - and I have a sneaking suspicion that is what was causing the problem.
Since then I have updated XP quite considerably, including having SP2 on the machine - indeed last night, just after I posted my original query I tried Icewind Dale II CD1, it spun up OK and did come up with the install screen, and no error messages.
