After giving a lengthy battle for the pros and cons of a avenger/fighter vs the ranger/cleric in another thread I tried out the R/C for myself.

Archer/Cleric will lose their proficencies in bows and cleric can only use slings and thus the bow would be unavailable to them.

A basic half-elf ranger/cleric seems to be the best option at the moment, with being able to cast every divine spell from the get-go.

Proficienes would be the 'classic' Flail of Ages and Crom Fayer dual-wielding that everyone seems to love. Kensai/Mage (also tried out for myself recently) should wield a katana, Dakkon Zerth's blade in particular will be beneficial and with the 2 stars in single weapon style, this would be beneficial in the early moments of the game were AC and defence is a factor.

Equipment in general doesn't mean squat when you get high enough to cast level 7 divine and level 6 arcane spells. But until then, rely on some easy to gain weapons - Namarra+2, Kondar+1+3vShapeshifters,Staff of Curing etc - basically items that can be gained from poaching or looting vs one enemy.

With the amount of excess equipment, shouldn't be a problem - I stole, found 50k worth of gold so anyone should be able to get to chapter 3 without actual combat.

As for dual-classing - the tables that were supplied should maximum dual-classing levels for kensai and a human ranger or cleric. But if you opt for the half-elf r/c the r/c tables become moot.

XP - don't know go kill a dragon that might help with the xp factor. But as far as that goes I am no help as I tend not to bother about the xp rewards etc as I always end up high enough especially with an unmodded BG2 game.
