Well my room mate got pool of radiance working again yesterday. I asked him how he did it, but I'm still not clear on exactly what he did to fix the problem. He just mentioned that he closed down some programs in the background such as realplayer and Norton Utilities. And then he put in cd1 from pool of radiance, and hit the mouse button over "play" the machine then asked for cd2 next, and he put in cd2 and then activated the cd2 by clicking on the icon of pool of radiance, it worked when he did this.

Maybe the graphics card just needed to be set correctly or he had downloaded the latest drivers before he could get pool of radiance running again, I'm not sure, but at least it works now.
