| The CE has a bunch of containers that are locked without traps. The "pick locks" skill is much more useful in the CE.
As far as I know, once a lock is jammed, there isn't any way to open the container / door.
The bash skill depends on your strength. I think you just click the button and watch, but that's always seemed boring to me, so I always develop my thief skills.
