I recognise that newspaper journalism has a different style to the standard English generally expected in university papers, but this piece is one of the worst I've seen in some time.

LOL! Yeah, I used to be a language (and punctuation) Nazi, but the time I have spent on forums has made me not only tolerant of sloppy English, but an emulator of it... because the printed word in forums is actually very close to speech, which is much more loosely constructed than the printed word (books, newspapers, etc).
I just can't stand sloppy language in print.
