Well, I've played the game quite alot, and what i've found is that it is better to focus on one character at a time. By doing this you'll most probably level up faster, learn more of the game mechanincs (not much to learn below level 40) and you will probably learn to play that character better, since you will get the time to know all your skills, and you will get in more situations where you will need to use them.
Regarding the hunter, since you are playing a dwarf I'd reccomend you to go for engineering, this is because as a dwarf you get a +5 to gun skill, meaning that at lvl 10, you'll have the gunskill of a lvl 11, and on 60 you'll have the gunskill of a lvl 61. Therefor I'd reccomend you to go with guns. with engineering you can make amongst other things bullets and guns. this is a very nice feat, because as a hunter, nothing is worse than running out of ammo ages away from a vendor.
When it comes to talent points, I'd reccomend going down the BM (beast mastery) talent tree, thus imporoving your pet. A BM specced pet can even be used as an offtank in emergencies in the endgame instances. However, Aimed shot in the Marksmanship tree is a very good skill, encreasing ranged damage by 75 on rank one, and 600 at the highest rank. Aimed shot only requiers 11 skillpoints in Marksmanship, so it is also possible to get that, as well as going all the way down on the BM tree.
An important part of the hunter (especially a BM one) is the pet. A very good site for info about pets are
http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/ where you can dig up all the information about pets you could ever want. be sure to check out the Top Choice: 50 Great Pets section, as this has many good tips for each level. You can have 3 pets at any given time, two in the stables, and one with you (you can only changes pets at a stable master) however, in order to learn new skills for your pet, you have to tame the creature that possess that skill. therefore, it is only reccomended to have 2 pets (ill get back to which type) and an open spot for taming pets only for their skills.
So you'll want two pets. You'll want a tank pet (a pet that can take alot of damage, and keep aggro away from you so that you can fire away) and you want a high-dps pet (dps=damage per second) all the info about the different types of pets can be found on the site i posted above. I'll just do a quick run through them. Tank pets are generally Bears, Gorillas, turtles, crabs and boars. Damage pets are cats, owls, bats, wolfs.
Personally I like boars, There is a good article about why they are so good on that site. Basically boars are good for everything.. they have good armorrating, they have high HP, decent damage, and of course they look and sound great!

Now in the most recent patch boars have also learned Charge, which is a very good skill. you'll find most boars at the lower levels, i think the highest level ones are around lvl 40 or so. All boars have the same stats. But many look different, and some have very unique appearances .. Like the boar I have

However, in the end it's all up to you, but I must warn you, hunter is dangerously fun

And at lvl 10-29 you should really try out PvP, you'll be the master of the battlefield, hunters are so powerful there once you get aimed shot (can be aquired at lvl 20)
