I've only just heard of this, can't say I'm too thrilled about it myself, though it may help in catching criminals.
I think it depends a lot on the use of such a system - when does someone consult it, rather than using other methods?
And of course, it's a recipe for abuse, if the wrong people get hold of some of that information, then who wants to be the person to live with it?

As for the protest thing, I think it needs co-ordination. But then the government went ahead with war on Iraq despite the amount of protest to it. If the government thinks it can get away with it, then in this case it's likely that it will.
