What about if your character is somekind of outsider, who at times (when you are on) comes to help the party, and so on, but isn't always able to join the adventure (for different reasons from personal bussiness to disagreement with the party)? This way it would be a bit easier to you to come and go, and if it seems that the party is going to be many levels above you, I can always grant some compensation-xp just to keep you near the rest party.
Also, if something important happens during session, I can always send you short description so that you have at least small clue what has happened. ANd of course, rest you have to find out In Character, by asking other their latest adventures you weren't able to participate.
How does this sound?
