| Original BG area, going south to Beregost, north to around Waterdeep, east to Irieabor or Darkhold. A lot of ruins, fallen kingdoms and smaller cities dot the landscape.
Shadowdale and Elminster are boring areas, not of lack of action, but they are described in so many novels and sourcebooks that it's just not that interesting anymore.
Aglarond vs. Thay....not going to happen that soon. As long as Szass Tam holds sway over Thay and The Simbul adminsters Aglarond it's a stalemate. If it's going to be a "current event" story it has to adhere to Wizards of the Coast canon, and they have fun with their Dragonrages, Empire of Shadows and Silence of Lloth storylines.
