Because I think that if you do it the evil way (drowning the slaves), the miner won't come up to you, but you can march into Baldur's Gate anyway.
So have you already tried to talk to Scar, the Flaming Fist Soldier who guards the bridge to Baldur's Gate? Because I don't think, that you need the slave to continue the story. Important is, that you have killed Daeveron, so that you get into the next chapter. So if you really don't need the miner to continue the game, you don't have to worry much; it is nice, that you get experience and 2 reputationpoints, but you can easily get both later on (also, by the time I've reached the Cloakwood Mines as a Good-aligment character, my reputation is already 20 anyway...)
