| Don't make that trip early in the game; it's a tough place. But when you do go down there, be sure you have a great deal of the appropriate elemental (and spiritual!) resistance. In fact, I recall both fire and electrical traps.
It also helps to have quite a few scorpion traps and the proper skill to use 'em, since you'll be mobbed by undead. If you have your pyramids (and you should), use and drop one as an emergency save.
