| Alchemy probably has a level requirement higher than you are right now. I'm pretty sure there's a button in the skills interface that allows you to see all skills, even if you're not high enough yet.
Yes, selling things is often a pain in the game, especially early when Aleroth is your only option. Just stash the axes somewhere in the meantime.
