Yes they can, but it's a bit tricky. You cant't kill them yourself, the suggestion ends if you show hostility, so let them die in a fight with monsters.
After you've made them Npc's, you might have to "force" attack monsters in the Temple. Senchock i.e. is scripted to be "friendly" vs Temple enemies. This also means that those nasty bugbears are unlikely to attack him.
