Okay my personal preferences for the classes you have suggested. Mage- sorceror. Fighter-barbarian. Thief- swashbuckler(dual wielding scimitars and shortswords). Cleric - priest of helm.
I know sorceror and barbarian may not be considered kits but this is what I like.
