I went in after I could cast Simulacrum and used the Protection from Magic from my simulacrum so I didn't use up the originals (see Simulacrum in strategy section).
If you want to do it now but aren't high enough level to cast Simulacrum you can buy and use a Simulacrum scroll. That way it will cost you only a Simulacrum scroll...and although they're rare, there are a lot more of them than just 2 like Protection from Magic.
Remember that Protection from Magic will only shield one character and it prevents the use of beneficial spells too. You'll need a pretty powerful fighter and you'll want Negative Plane protection (Amulet of Power or Mace of Disruption +2). It's much easier to do Twisted Rune after you come back to town, but the Staff of the Magi would be nice to have sooner.
Koshi is in the Guarded Compound in the Temple district...but why are you looking for him? Are you just trying to pick up Celestial Fury or did you get a quest to go there? I'm still trying to find quests that send you to either the compound or to Twisted Rune.
