ego draconis-Temple of Doom

The walkthrough on Game Banshee notes that the ToD can be "extremely difficult for melee players" which I have found to be quite an understatement. After dozens of tries during two days, I cannot make it past the first few steps into the Temple.
No matter if I go right or left with my avatar, he gets poisoned to death, no matter if I use potions or not. I have tried to time the falling drops of poison, jumping and zigzagging but that does not work. I have followed the bodies and blood as the W/T says, but I still get dosed and killed. If I do get a bit into the cavern, I am zapped by bolts that immediately finish the job of killing me off.
Hard it is and I do not mind working at a game situation to find a solution, but I would like a chance to fight a bit. Any tips?
Generally, it took me a while to get the feel of D2ED, and I was enjoying playing but I feel a bit blitzkrieg-ed by the Temple's toughness.
Thanks for the help..

What level are you? You can leave the Temple of Doom until later, when you've completed more/most of Broken Valley.

You shouldn't get poisoned if you stick to the path of blood and bodies (except for one part you have to jump onto a raft/platform to get across some water). If you have the creature or a summon active it would at least draw some of the fire from the opponents there. A ranger or (better) mage head for the creature should make it more helpful offensively, but your best bet would be to get yourself a bow (you should at least keep Rothman's bow handy, if you've done that quest, to equip for its Wisdom bonus before turning in other quests).

Thanks I followed the trail of corpses, learning on the way that that was not always foolproof, and made it through to the fight in the cave.
BTW, I am level 12 melee fighter with a bow and a creature--both helped. My estimation of the game has increased as I learn the mechanics of gameplay.

Another couple levels would have made things easier there (though you got more experience from combat than you would have had you waited). At level 15 you can learn the Healing spell (even just level 1 helps conserve potions, and may be all that is needed to recover from poison, etc).

With my warrior in D2:ED I maxed Mana Efficiency so that I could summon the creature and have enough mana left over to cast Healing if I needed to. I also assumed I would eventually start using some high mana skills like Thousand Strikes, but never did.
