yea, i often do very similar. after i thought that i REALLY should get more into magic, i force my parties not to have too many straight fighters (so i took cernd and vic, now i use both straight fighting...). but all the smaller fights, and those make at least 80% of all the fighting can be done w/o magic easily, and i hate resting for spells (and then everyone becomes exhausted and i still have 3/4 of my spells left).
if u want to change ur gameplay, dont pick more than 1 straight fighter (like minsc, keldy, korgan, valy), and go with small groups with many magic users, as u just have to rely on it then. basically, a party should have cleric/druid, mage and must have thief, a real fighter type is not necessary. i am thinking about using cernd as only "fighter" next game, might become interesting...
