@fable, He did something else before that, something so terrible he thought he needed to be immortal in order to have enough time to atone for his sins. Unfortunately this backfired horribly, since he not only lost his memories (and the chance to atone), but some of his various incarnations committed deeds almost as bad. Not to mention source of his immortality, which you refered to: that someone else would take his place whenever he died. The poor guy was doomed from the beginning.
